“Overcoming Disruption, Transforming the AIDS Response”
On behalf of the CSOs/NASOSS and on my behalf, allow me to welcome you today to the Commemoration of World AIDS Day on 1st December 2025.
We honor and remember loved ones we have lost and those living with HIV/AIDS in our communities. This day reminds us of the progress we have made and challenges us to reflect on how we support people experiencing pain, stigma, and discrimination.
“We see the pain, we feel the suffering, and we reach out to those affected.” – Madam Editha Meling
Overcoming Disruption, Transforming the Response
The theme calls for collective responsibility. Many lives are still at risk, and communities must work together to address ongoing challenges.
We are grateful to our UN partners and the South Sudan AIDS Commission for their continuous support to people living with HIV/AIDS.
Addressing Stigma and Discrimination
Last year, H.E. Vice President Josephine Lagu Yanga, during the commemoration of WAD, emphasized the need to tackle stigma and discrimination. A directive was issued by the former Vice President of the Service Cluster to all governors, but it was not formally documented.
“We urge Your Excellency to ensure a formal order is issued to protect the rights of people living with HIV/AIDS in South Sudan.”
Stigma and discrimination remain major barriers to effective HIV response. Addressing them is a shared responsibility between government, communities, and civil society.
Call for Government Support and Funding
We call on the government to take full responsibility for funding HIV interventions.
If decisive action is not taken now, South Sudan may face a rise in HIV cases in the near future.
“Let us work together to transform the HIV response in South Sudan. No one should be left behind.”
Conclusion
World AIDS Day 2025 is an opportunity to honor lives lost, support those living with HIV/AIDS, and renew our commitment to a resilient and inclusive HIV response.
